Celine Vahsen (°1987 in Malmedy, BE, woont en werkt in Brussel) is een kunstenares en geeft les aan het KASK, School of Arts, in Gent, in de textielafdeling. Vahsen won de IKOB Feminist Art Prize 2022 in de categorie Regionale Prijs. Het uitgangspunt van Vahsen’s werk is de culturele erfenis van het medium textiel. Met een hedendaagse benadering verkent ze
technieken die geworteld zijn in de voorouderlijke
textielcreatie. Haar technisch onderzoek omvat verschillende referenties en tradities uit geografisch
verspreide, hybride culturen, alsook gebruiken uit verschillende periodes doorheen de geschiedenis van
het weven. Vahsen creëert abstracte werken met behulp van manuele processen. Elk werk wordt over een lange
periode opgebouwd, inclusief doeken die ze zelf
weeft. Van dichtbij gezien onthullen de resulterende
beelden subtiele ritmes, patronen die verankerd zijn in de fundamentele structuur van het weefsel zelf, dat ze verkrijgt door garens te verven voor

ze geweven worden. Ze beslist niet op voorhand
over het uiteindelijke motief: ze laat toe dat ritmes willekeurig ontstaan tijdens het creatieproces van het
doek. Het idee is om de metamorfose van draden tot
een structuur te observeren, en hun transformatie tot een onvoorspelbaar beeld via een aleatorische
benadering.
[EN] Celine Vahsen (born 1987 in Malmedy, BE, lives and works in Brussels) is an artist and teaches at the KASK, School of Arts, in Ghent, in the textile department. Vahsen won the IKOB Feminist Art Prize 2022 in the category Regional Prize. The starting point of Vahsen’s work is the cultural heritage of the medium textile. With a contemporary approach, she explores techniques rooted in ancestral textile creation. Her technical research incxludes various references and traditions from geographically dispersed, hybrid cultures, as well as customs from different periods throughout the history of weaving.Vahsen creates abstract works using manual processes. Each work is constructed over a long period of time, including canvases that she weaves herself. Seen up close, the resulting images reveal subtle rhythms, patterns anchored in the fundamental structure of the fabric itself, which she obtains by dyeing yarns before weaving. She does not decide on the final motif in advance: she allows rhythms to emerge randomly during the process of creating the canvas. The idea is to observe the metamorphosis of threads into a structure, and their transformation into an unpredictable image through an aleatoric approach.
